Untitled

the sea hugs the shore
dunes more black than white
the sheen of sand wet in the sea’s retreat
reflecting obsidian light
we speed past birds
white on stilts
picking their afternoon snack

the soft engine hum drowns
what little noise we make
the tin car box
knows no noise above this frequency

unfinished poetry written this early September as we were visiting black sand mining -affected communities in Aparri, Cagayan
